Message from the New President, Dolly Kohls

I tapped the gavel to close the June, 2005 meeting at Coldstream Country Club, and my thoughts turned immediately to the next year's program. Unless you elect a President who is an entertainer, actor, comedian, historian, professor, or the like ( I am none of the above) it is imperative to get programs outlined, interesting speakers contacted, and speakers committed on our calendar and theirs in INK. Just a bit of panic set in. It didn't last long. At our first Board Meeting, in June, the Board wrapped up business from the previous year and set about charting a course for the upcoming year. Our Board is par excellence (sorry sometimes French does say it better… however, we've learned that English is always evolving, incorporating foreign phrases and words because we recognize the importance of "saying it best" … so it is now also an English expression… but I digress). Eileen Knollman, Immediate Past President, is a keystone of ESU-Cincinnati Branch. She has done an outstanding job as President for the past three years and as advisor to the new President and Board continues to contribute so much. Thank you Eileen. Terry Grundy, First Vice President, is spearheading our program endeavors and doing an outstanding job. We've put our heads together, rolled up our sleeves, and planned what we believe are fantastic programs for the year. We hope you'll agree.

Our first Regular Meeting, September 6...

was a program by Cincinnati Art Museum Director, Timothy Rub entitled "The British Collection of Art at Cincinnati Art Museum". Above and beyond the interesting art he showed, was the great style with which Timothy Rub introduced us to his selection for this presentation. With a warm presence at the podium, an informative narrative, lovingly stroking some, hastily moving on others, his easy wit, all kept the audience engaged. As he wound up his presentation, I leaned a bit forward hoping it wasn't over. His presentation left us wanting to see more then and there; wanting to learn more; wanting to get closer to this dimension of communication; to understand it better.

Our October 3 Program...

took us across the waters to England, tracing the ancestry of George Washington and his family's Manor home. Our presenter was Martin Sirot-Smith, Director Emeritus of Sulgrave Manor. Since our speaker talked about Washington's OLD HOME, we dined on a menu served from his NEW HOME, and especially designed for us by Ann Schrimpf. I can't imagine a better way to have spent an evening. Hope you agree. I won't go through the remainder of the year's programs at this time! These programs are all planned for you, our members of ESU-Cincinnati Branch, so that we can fulfill our objectives: "Creating Global Understanding through English". Your support by attending our Regular Meetings and your contributions in other ways are vital to our organization. So, the course is charted, the sails are set, and …ugggh another French phrase: Bon Voyage!

Dolly, President

Bob Amott and Janice Flanagan also have a message for you!...

To plan on attending the local Shakespeare competition that will be held on February 25 and on March 4, 2006. More details later. Bob and Janice are pictured here with the winning poster designed by Lori Beard, of the Art Academy that will be used to publicize the competition in the high schools.
